A contrast of extreme weather conditions expected over the Greater Horn of Africa

By Judith Akolo

Climate scientists at the Igad Climate Predictions and Applications Center (ICPAC) have predicted contrasting extreme weather conditions during April to June over the Greater Horn of Africa region.

“There is high chances of drier than usual conditions indicated over the eastern horn of Africa with the central and north-western areas expected to record wetter than usual conditions during the April to June season. The corresponding temperatures are expected to be warmer than usual,” says the statement by ICPAC.

In the April forecast ICPAC which is a specialised institution of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) says that drier than usual conditions are expected over south-eastern Ethiopia, central to southern Somalia, eastern Kenya, and isolated areas in western Uganda and South Sudan.

However, according to the climate scientists, wetter than usual conditions are expected over western Kenya, eastern Uganda, much of South Sudan, southern Sudan, parts of central to south-western Ethiopia, Rwanda, parts of Burundi and Tanzania.

They further warn that “warmer than usual conditions are expected over most parts of the region,” with normal to cooler than normal temperatures expected over the cross-border areas of South Sudan-Uganda-Kenya.

According to the forecast warmer than usual conditions are expected over most parts of the region which Somalia expected to experience normal conditions during the forecast period.
